Pink Plumbers
Aug. 17th, 2015 09:33 pmThis is something of a summary of my previous blog post, but in English.
I am talking about this page: http://www.pinkplumbers.com/index.asp
It is great that female plumbers have come together under a shared brand name, and will (hopefully) thus be more successful. But why oh why does their name have to be so pink? It is as if a woman has to make amends for working in a "male" job by being otherwise as feminized as possible. Pinkified. Most things traditionally "masculine", like, say, drills, are nowadays available in a pink version, so that women can use them too.
No one ever felt the need to paint knitting needles pink to make them sufficiently feminine. It is only done as an apology of sorts, for when women do things we are not "allowed" to do usually.
Dear readers who live in countries where there is no pink plumber network: please do hire female plumbers (look for them in the telephone book, if need be), and show them that they can get hired without painting their name (and possibly tools) pink.
As for the operating area of pink plumbers ... well, I am totally in favour of hiring them. I applaud their effort. I just wish it wasn't so ... pink. Maybe, one day in the future, women won't have to apologize for working as plumbers anymore.
